What a Day

Let me start by saying, Ender is a total badass. Over the last 36 hours he has been pricked by 34 needles.

The day started out tough when the last 2 possible IVs Ender had went bad. He was really low on platelets and has needed blood for tests since yesterday. Nurses and NPs and Clinicians and Fellows and Residents have not been able to get blood. Since he had no veins for IVs, he needed to get a Broviac Line or Central line that goes into the chest. Catch 22 is, to do this procedure, his platelets needed to significantly increase and to get get platelets he needs an IV, which we couldn't get so we needed a Broviac line. Anyway, the clock was ticking because he also needed fluids and nutrients and his antibiotic doses. All the people listed above came back in and got a final impossibly small vein to hold up long enough to get a transfusion. Once the platelets were in, the procedure was started. It took an hour and a half, 2 cuts, some stitches, 3 doses of morphine, and 2 doses of sedatives. We waited in the waiting room with tight chests and blutterflies in our stomachs. Finally, we were called back and we saw Ender, heart pumping, looking adorable. He is still fighting infection for the foreseeable future, but we are so proud of him.

Rooney's X-ray today came back with a diagnosis of "Resolved". This was really good news as we were hoping she would not get sepsis and then Meningitis. She will continue with antibiotics and nutrition by IV for 10 days. She was alive and well today, Libby got to hold her!
