Still Rocky

Test results from the spinal tap came back. Ender's infection spread from his instestine's to his blood (sepsis). From there it traveled to his spinal fluid which goes to his brain. An infection of the spinal fluid is meningitis, his specifically is bacterial meningitis. This was tough news for us to take, but we are trying to stay positive. X-rays taken over the last 24 hours has shown the infection in Ender's intestines to have lessened, though he still has some gas in the lining. There have been no perforations, meaning no surgery has been necissary. We are hoping this continues to decrease. We found out yesterday evening that the antibiotics he is taking for his NEC cover his Meningitis as well. Currently we are hoping that he started his antibiotics early enough to prevent brain swelling or other complications. The nurses are doing a good job of keeping his vitals in the right place by adjusting different interventions. He is the cutest little guy, the strongest fighter, and the best little baby boy we could have hoped for. I have never loved anything so much in my life.

Rooney is currently still at Magee Women's Hospital which has caused some issues with sharing time between babies. Her latest X-rays have also shown a decrease in infection in her intestines. The Attending at Magee tried a spinal tap today to test for meningitis, though they were unable to draw any fluid and will have to try again tomorrow. She is still on a CPAP, remains stable, and is absolutely precious.

  1. Thank you Atlee for sharing. I only got to see Rooney and Ender twice and couldn't believe how mesmerized and attached I got. They are beautiful, strong and perfect.
